Security: Nigeria Enforces No National ID Number No Mobile Number

Nigeria apex telecoms regulator, NCC, has said it is set to enforce National Identity Regulations 2017 that stipulates any citizen without unique Identification number would not register mobile number

Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta has revealed today that the regulator is set to enforce the National Identity Regulations 2017.

Danbatta was speaking at this year’s 3rd Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, (GOCOP) in Lagos.

According to him, that regulation provides that a person must provide his/her National Identity Number (NIN) in order to register a telephone SIM (subscriber identification Module) card.

Danbatta, who was ably represented by Mr Omoniyi Ibietan, Head Online Media and Special Publication at NCC, spoke on the theme: ‘NCC, SIM Registration, Security and National Development’.

He  added that the Commission, in collaboration with all stakeholders has set in motion mechanisms for compliance.

 “I therefore, would like to use this opportunity, to encourage Nigerians, you and I, who want to acquire new SIM cards, for one reason or the other, to ensure that they obtain a National Identity Number, first”, he said.

The nation’s telecoms watchdog, he said, has been doing a lot to towards engendering security of lives and property, for economic development, in our country.

NCC said it is committed to using telecoms to support the current tripartite agenda of the Federal Government, which are, to improve the economy, enhance of lives and property and to fight corruption, in our society.

The occasion was attended by Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, Bayesa State Governor Seriake Henry Dickson, and a host of other dignitaries.
